All our products are treated with a high quality of Helmsmen polyurethane which also gives them a glossy look. If you like that finish, they will need another coat every year or so. We have houses going on 9 years out in the backyard.
We do recommend that birdhouses be taken down in the fall, since, mice will enlarge the holes to find a place to over winter in the northern states. When down the houses can be cleaned and disinfected to allow healthy broods for the next season.
To clean the birdhouse, raise the roof up on the copper hanging wire, and, empty the nesting materials; then sanitize the interior using 10% bleach solution or Lysol and store until the following season.
